Light and shadows tell the stories of how we perceive the world. In my photography, I explore how changing a light source illuminates the subtle details we often miss -- the details that define a subject into its own reality. I want to emphasize the moments where each expression is exposed. Revealing one’s self is a courageous act; light shows the acceptance of attention or the retreat into the shadows. However, there is nothing lacking within the shadows; often the most truth can be found. I was inspired to create this project because of my own struggles with balancing the light and shadows. Finding the courage to reveal more of myself hasn’t always been easy for me, and for parts of my life, retreating into the background was more comfortable. In the shadows, I learned about who I was and discovered my own strengths. However, I have found more enjoyment in life by stepping out of the shadows, and seeing the light all around me.
